The Rosberg-Hamilton combination seemed perfect at first, as the two drivers were also teammates in various youth categories as well as friends. The working relationship of the pair started well, but fractures appeared over time. This was partly due to several unpleasant situations on the track.

For example, Rosberg and Hamilton hit each other during the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, which allowed Daniel Ricciardo to run away with the victory. At the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, the pair crashed on the opening lap, and things also went wrong in Austria that year. Despite this, the two Mercedes drivers dominated during the 2014-2016 seasons. Hamilton claimed the title in 2014 and 2015, but in 2016 it was a different kettle of fish.
