YouTube Live Video from approx 4pm on 5th November
Join Dino and Helen from Rocket FM as they broadcast live from above the War Memorial on School Hill in Lewes for the bonfire celebrations on 5th November 2021.
Lewes is renowned for its bonfire celebrations, remembering the events surrounding the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, as well as the seventeen Lewes (and other Sussex) Martyrs, who were executed fifty years previously, under the reign of Mary I.
Each bonfire society also holds a service at a war memorial in the town, with the majority visiting the town centre memorial to lay a wreath, hold a silence and then light the town with bright poppies and torches. Bonfire was absent for only the second time in most living memories in 2020, but it returns with a bang in 2021 and Dino and Helen will be covering around five hours of action from the town centre.
Search Rocket FM Lewes on Facebook (Like and add notifications), where later in the evening we aim to have some live reports from the firesites. The authorities request that non-residents stay away from these celebrations, as there is no parking available and the station will be closed from late afternoon until Saturday morning, so if you can’t be there for real, then this is the best way to enjoy the atmosphere.
Expect to see processions from Lewes Borough Bonfire Society, Commercial Square Bonfire Society, Southover Bonfire Society, South Street Bonfire Society, Waterloo Bonfire Society and, of course, Cliffe Bonfire Society; all supported by visiting societies from all over Sussex.
